Adults set to show off elementary knowledge

‘Are you smarter’ set for next week

POSTED: September 18, 2013 4:00 a.m.

For the seventh consecutive year, adults from across Dawson County hope to show they are indeed smarter than a 10-year-old.

Set up much like Jeff Foxworthy's game show, "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?" Reading Education Association of Dawson County's contest pairs teams to answer questions taught at the elementary school level.

Proceeds from "Are You Smarter than a 10-year-old" benefit the group's varied literacy programs and help promote a literate community, according to the group's executive director.

"This brings the community together in a setting to raise awareness of the importance of literacy in our community," said Sandy Lipkowitz. "With improved literacy we could build a workforce and a literate community in hopes of bringing more business and jobs to Dawson County."

For the competition, eight, three-member teams will attempt to answer the most questions correctly to win.

Like the popular game show, fifth-graders from each of the county's elementary schools will be on hand to help out if the questions are too tough for adult minds.

"This is an exciting and fun event. Our brave team members put themselves in the spotlight to answer questions that they knew a long time ago but now have forgotten," Lipkowitz said. "There's a lot of laughter, but we're don't laugh at each other. We laugh with each other."

The Dawsonville Lions Club claimed the title as winners last year, but Lipkowitz said the Dawson County Woman's Club team has already vowed to regain the title.

"And the Lanier Tech team, they are all educators and they've been studying, so this is going to be a great competition," she said.

The contest begins at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 26 and will be held in the auditorium at Dawson County Middle School.

Admission is free.

There will also be a live auction for six tickets and a parking pass to the Nov. 9 Georgia vs. Appalachian State game, as well as a silent cake auction.
