ASK THE EXPERTS

Ladies manage two triple plays in games

POSTED: September 3, 2013 4:13 p.m.

Two triple plays in two games is almost unheard of in softball or for that matter baseball. The Lady Tiger softball team accomplished just that against Fannin and White counties last week.

Against Fannin the Lady Rebels led off the seventh inning with two singles that put runners on first and second. The next Fannin player hit a line drive at Dawson shortstop Joy Lewis for the first out. Lewis then picked the runner off first base for the second out. First baseman Brooke Wende then fired a bullet to third baseman Emily Hunsucker to complete the triple play.

On Thursday, in a home game against White County, the Lady Tigers pulled a triple play off again.

After a walk and an error put runners on first and second, with no outs, a line drive to right fielder Heather Brady produced the first out. Brady threw to first baseman Brittany Phillips to pick a diving runner off for the second out. Phillips then relayed the ball to Lewis at short for the third and final out of the game.

The Lady Tigers started off the week with a non-region contest at Pickens High in Jasper. Dawson County escaped with a 4-3 victory against the Dragonettes.

Coach Jimmy Pruett's team held a 1-0 lead following a RBI single by Lewis heading into the top of the seventh inning.

Lewis pitched a good game with 15 strikeouts in 6.2 inning of work, while only giving up three hits. Martie Rogers came on to the get the final out for the save.

Three more runs crossed the plate for the Lady Tigers in the seventh.

RBIs from Natalie Glass and Heather Brady allowed Sam Keeney, Brady and Brooke Wende to score.

Pickens made it a game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh before Rogers came in to strike out the final batter.

Dawson traveled to Blue Ridge on Aug. 27 for a Region 7-AAA battle with Fannin County.

The team came away with a 6-3 win.

The highlight on offense was a three-run home run by Lewis in the sixth inning. Lewis also picked up an RBI in the third inning that drove in Hunsucker.

The first three hitters for the Lady Tigers went 7-for-13 to set the table.

Leadoff batter Emily Hunsucker was 3-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and a double.

Second batter Katelynn Simpson was 2-for-4 with a run, RBI and a double.

Lewis was in the three hole and picked up two hits.

Martie Rogers picked up the win in the pitchers circle. The senior pitched a complete game, giving up three runs with six strikeouts.

Dawson County finally got to play a home game on Aug. 29 with another region foe, White County.

Rogers pitched a no-hitter against the Lady Warriors. She was consistently around the strike zone, forcing White County to put the ball in play. Rogers finished the game with four strikeouts.

The Lady Tigers scored four runs in the second inning, which put the game out of reach.

Pruett's squad had eight hits in the contest. Rogers and Natalie Glass (two RBIs) each had two hits a piece. Also picking up hits were Hunsucker (two RBIs), Simpson, Tabitha Morrison and Brady.

The Lady Tigers are 6-2 overall, and 4-0 in Region play.

Dawson will play today and Friday in a tournament hosted by North Oconee.

The team will play Loganville at 4:30 p.m. and North Oconee at 6 p.m. today.

Friday the team will play Bryan County at 4 p.m. and Greater Atlanta Christian at 7 p.m.

Squeezed in between will be a region showdown with reigning state Class AAA champions Buford at 5:55 p.m. Thursday.
