City qualifying deadline Friday

POSTED: August 28, 2013 4:00 a.m.

Candidates who wish to qualify for Dawsonville's Nov. 5 election have until Friday to submit their forms.

The ballot will feature two city council seats, as well as a referendum on Sunday restaurant liquor sales.

City residents will also be able to register for voting this week from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. in the Dawson County Board of Elections & Registration office on Academy Avenue.

The last day to register to vote in the Nov. 5 election is Oct. 7.

This year, two council seats, currently held by Councilman Mike Sosebee and Councilwoman Angie Smith are on the ballot.

As of press time Tuesday afternoon, only Sosebee had submitted his application, according to Assistant Registrar Karen Armstrong.

As of last week, Smith was still tentative on her decision and has yet to apply this week.

The qualifying fee for a council seat is $180. Dates and fees for this year's election were set by the city council during its Jan. 7 meeting, pursuant to state law.

In addition to the government posts, the city's residents will also vote on a referendum that would allow restaurants in the city to sell liquor by the drink on Sundays. Currently, city restaurants can only sell beer and wine.

For questions involving the Dawsonville election or registering to vote, call the Dawson County Board of Elections and Registration at (706) 344-3640.
