The middle school softball team for Dawson County opened the season with a heartbreaking 7-3 loss at Lumpkin County on Tuesday, but bounced back to defeat Pickens County Middle by an 11-3 score on Friday.

The win over Pickens was in region play.

Head Coach Jeff Compton's team was tied with Lumpkin 3-3 in the fifth inning, but gave up four runs over the last two innings to absorb the loss.

"We hit the ball well against Lumpkin," Compton said.

Maggie Schandera pitched well, according to Compton, and recorded 12 strikeouts in the loss.

Madison Worley had a double to start off the game for Dawson County and scored the team's first run of the season.

Dawson County rebounded on Friday. The team got off to a 7-1 lead against the Dragonettes from Pickens County Middle.

Compton's team scored five runs in the first inning. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the "mercy rule."

Pitcher Ashton Bruce pitched a fine game, according to Compton. Bruce recorded nine strikeouts in the win.

Scoring runs for Dawson were: Gabbi Buchan, three, Lacy Mills, Karly Thurmond and Schandera with two runs each. Brandi Williams and Kati Brady also each added a run.

Worley had another great game at the plate, she had three singles. Worley is currently batting .625 after two games.

"I am really proud of each player," Compton said.

The team will be in action again on Friday with another trip to Jasper to face Jasper Middle School at Roper Park. First pitch will be at 4:30 p.m.
