Dawson County High School Head Softball Coach Jimmy Pruett's team opened up the season with a 2-0 win over Union County as part of the Lanier Pointe Tournament in Gainesville on Friday.

The season marks Pruett's 19th at the helm of the Lady Tigers' team.

Runs were scored in the first and third innings to help the team secure the win.

Emily Hunsucker drew a walk to lead off the game. Second batter Martie Rogers reached on an error that put runners on first and third base.

Hunsucker crossed the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of Joy Lewis that gave Dawson County a 1-0 advantage.

The Lady Tigers added a run in the third inning. Once again Hunsucker reached on a walk and came around to score the second run for her team.

Rogers and Hunsucker were the only Dawson County players to record hits.

Rogers pitched a tremendous game. The senior hurler went five innings and allowed just one hit. Rogers recorded eight strikeouts in the opening season win.

Lewis, who came on in relief in the sixth inning, picked up the save.

She recorded four strikeouts while facing just six hitters.

Saturday's play was not as fortunate for the Lady Tigers.

Dawson County played Flowery Branch to open up the morning. Things started well, as the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 3-0 lead.

Hunsucker was hit by a pitch to begin the bottom of the first. Second batter Kaitlyn Simpson reached on a fielder's choice and scored the team's first run after Lewis singled.

Lewis recorded run number two following an RBI by Rogers, who eventually scored the Lady Tigers' third run.

Flowery Branch fought back to score two runs in the third and three runs in the fifth to take a 5-3 lead.

Dawson County did not give up and tied the game in the sixth inning. Lewis, Rogers, Tabitha Morrison and Savannah Haberkam all singled in the inning. Lewis and Rogers scored both runs.

Flowery Branch scored a run in extra innings to take the 6-5 win.

Lewis had a big day at the plate. She went 3-for-4.

Morrison also had a mutiple-hit day with two hits. Rogers, Haberkam and Heather Brady all had single hits.

Rogers pitched a solid game. She allowed just six hits while striking out 12 batters in the loss.

In Saturday's second game, the Lady Tigers were matched up against Region 7-AAA foe Fannin County.

The Lady Tigers managed runs in the first and second inning, however, it wasn't enough as the team fell by a 3-2 score.

Rogers had an RBI single in the first that drove in Hunsucker and a wild pitch in the second inning that allowed Brady to score from third base.

The Lady Tigers managed just three hits by Rogers, Morrison and Hunsucker.

Lewis started on the mound and pitched a solid game. Lewis recorded 10 strikeouts and three walks, while allowing three hits to the Lady Rebels.

"We tried different line-ups in each of the three games," Pruett said. "We have only four starters back from last year's state playoff team, so we have a lot of questions to answer.

"I thought both Martie and Joy were solid pitching. On offense we have to find a way to generate some runs," he added.

The Lady Tigers will be back in action Thursday with a trip to North Hall. The game will be the first Region 7-AAA game of the season for Pruett's team.
