Love is in the air this Valentine’s season. That was particularly true at the Dawson County Senior Center, where Peter and Carolyn Hayes were remarried Feb. 6.

“This was a very special occasion and I am glad she was able to share it with her family and friends,” said Margie Weaver, director of the senior center. “I am happy for her and her new life.”

Peter, 69, and Carolyn Hayes, 63, first met in 1985 and married May 16, 1986.

They divorced about four years ago.

“I am looking forward to sharing the future together again,” Carolyn Hayes said. “We have matured over the past several years, learned from our mistakes, and we are ready for a fresh start.”

The couple won’t be the only newlyweds in Dawson County for long.

With Valentine’s Day falling on Saturday, Dawson County Magistrate Court will be offering free weddings or vow renewals Friday at the historic courthouse in downtown Dawsonville.

Cathy Brooks, government and community affairs representative for the county, said at least seven ceremonies have been scheduled so far.

For her ceremony, Carolyn Hayes turned to the senior center, which holds a special place in her heart. She worked there as an advocate for about six years.

“All the seniors love her, appreciate all that she has done, and we were pleased that she wanted to share this special day with us,” Weaver said.

Though retired, Carolyn Hayes still enjoys spending time at the senior center and was “glad to be among family and friends on this special day for Peter and I.”

“She is the most special woman in the world,” the groom said of his bride. “I love her dearly. I always have and I always will.”

Angela Carder and Larry Thompson enjoyed walking their mother down the aisle and giving her away in marriage. They said they were happy for the couple and wish them the best.

Randy Coggins of Solid Rock Church in Elberton officiated the ceremony.

Afterward, the couple celebrated at a reception with more than 30 friends and family members.
