Repairs made, roadways reopen

Overnight rain causes flooding

POSTED: August 7, 2013 4:34 p.m.

Repairs were made and all of the roads that were closed due to flooding after Wednesday's heavy rainfall have reopened.

Dawson County Manager Cindy Campbell continues to urge motorists to use caution and report any standing water or flooding on local roads.

Several roads were affected by the torrential storms that dropped as much as 10 inches of rain in some parts of southern Dawson County.

Harry Sosebee Road, between Lumpkin Campground and Black's Mill roads, Joe Chester, Holcomb and Little Mountain roads, Pine Bridge Drive, Thompson Road at Hwy. 53 and Cowart Road experienced flooding, though all are now passable.

A portion of Roscoe Collette Road in Cherokee County near the Dawson County remains closed. The Dawson County side is open to residents, but not to thru traffic, Campbell said.

Flooding also occurred along the Etowah River at River Park on Hwy. 9 South. Both the canoe put-in parking lot and adjacent dog walking facility are closed.

Dawson County Chief of Emergency Services Lanier Swafford said the river's flood stage is at 13 feet.
By 4 p.m., the water had been recorded at 15.41 feet, according to the National Weather Service.

"Across the county, the rain gauges ranged from 6 inches in some areas to as much as 10 inches," Swafford said. "We'll continue to monitor and hope the next batch that comes in doesn't cause any more damage."

Crews began responding to emergency roadway conditions early Wednesday morning and worked throughout the day to make repairs and move fallen trees from roadways.
