Overnight rain causes flooding

Crews continue to monitor roadways

POSTED: August 7, 2013 11:21 a.m.

Heavy rainfall overnight and into the morning caused a number of problems on roadways in Dawson County Wednesday.

County Manager Cindy Campbell said crews began responding to the situation in the early morning hours and reported flooding that will continue to be monitored throughout the day.

"Of course, with the rain continuing, the problems with continue and change as the day progresses," she said.

Flooding led to the closure of Holcomb Road. Little Mountain and Joe Chester roads were beginning to see standing water accumulations, though they have not been closed yet, according to Campbell.

A portion of Roscoe Collette Road in Cherokee County near the Dawson County line was also closed with local crews making repairs as "this is the only way out for some residents," Campbell said.

Additionally, the Etowah River has risen to the top of the stairs and is approaching the parking area at River Park on Hwy. 9 South. The adjacent dog walking area at the park is under water.

"Our public works personnel are out monitoring all reported issues and identifying problems," Campbell said. "Emergency personnel are also responding to calls and monitoring the situation. Both will be updating me throughout the day."

Campbell said crews will be able to better assess any damage and make needed repairs once the rain stops.

"Until that time, we will continue to monitor," she said.
