Lakewood Speedway Reunion is Saturday

POSTED: August 7, 2013 4:00 a.m.

The Georgia Racing Hall of Fame welcomes racers, mechanics, owners, track officials, fans and anyone with a personal connection to the historic Lakewood Speedway to Dawsonville Saturday to reminisce and remember the great times they had at the famed track.

The sixth annual Lakewood Speedway Reunion will be held from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., and attendees are invited to bring any items--photos, videos, posters and even cars--from the old track.

Drivers from Dawsonville played significant roles of the popularity of the track known as the "Indianapolis of the South" in the early years, according to local racing historian Gordon Pirkle.

"Lakewood Speedway held the biggest races outside Daytona and Indianapolis at the time. For here in Dawsonville, it was the first organized stock car racing in this part of the country," he said. "The very first race held there was won by Lloyd Seay from Dawsonville. The second race Roy Hall from Dawsonville and then come Gober Sosebee. Dawsonville pretty well dominated the track in the beginning."

The construction of Atlanta Motor Speedway in the 1960s put a strain on the Lakewood track's appeal. Lakewood Speedway officially closed in 1979.

The event will include a special recognition honoring the newly named NASCAR Hall of Fame member and inaugural Georgia Racing Hall of Fame Inductee Tim Flock, who won many times at the historic Lakewood Speedway.

There will also be a car show and a barbecue cook-off going on at the racing hall of fame during the reunion.

Tickets are $20 and include admission and lunch.
