DOT proposes roundabout

Meeting planned to discuss intersection

POSTED: July 31, 2013 4:00 a.m.

State transportation officials have announced a public meeting to discuss proposed improvements to the intersection of Hwy. 53 West and Elliott Family Parkway.

The Aug. 13 public information open house will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Dawson County Government Center, 25 Justice Way in Dawsonville.

At an estimated cost of $2.7 million, the proposed improvements include the construction of a three-legged, one-lane roundabout, according to Georgia Department of Transportation spokesman Mark McKinnon.

The project is slated to start in April or May 2016, though he cautioned that both the cost and start date are estimates.

"They could certainly change before the project begins," he said. "Also, the proposal is just that. It is not the final plan."

The public meeting is designed to gather input from the community on the proposal.

"That is the reason we have these public meetings," he said. "We want to hear what the public has to say and then possibly use those comments to alter the plans to better accommodate the needs of the community."
