Twenty three-month-old Mason Hyde needs a kidney and his father just happens to be a donor match.

"It was the best feeling ever," said Bobby Hyde of learning he could be a donor. "I didn't think it was possible. Babies' kidneys are so much smaller."

Mason's mother, Randi Hyde, said the family is waiting for Mason to hit 22 pounds before the transplant can take place. He needs to add about 4 pounds.

"Mason is on a special formula and has added vitamins and calcium and a special oil called MCT oil to help him grow," Randi Hyde said.

According to his growth chart, Mason should reach the desired weight by March 2014.

But sometimes babies with kidney issues just don't grow, she said.

"He plays and looks perfectly fine until you find out he's 2," she said.

Mason was born premature with a heart condition that causes oxygenated blood to mix with the deoxygenated blood in the heart.

Nearly two weeks after his birth, he was sent home on hospice not expected to live past a few days and certainly not months.

"He has come so far," Randi Hyde said. "I feel like the reason God puts people like this in our lives is to show us that He still has power."

Mason has undergone three heart surgeries and multiple other operations. He started having organ troubles again shortly after his last heart procedure.

"He started growing after the surgery, then his kidney started to fail him so they started him on dialysis in July 2012," Randi Hyde said.

She added that after the transplant he should be able to walk, eat by mouth and be a whole different kid.

Though there is a high possibility that Mason will need another transplant later in life, his mother has hope.

"He should get pretty far with his dad's kidney," she said.
