Post team qualifies for tourney

American Legion Post 247 qualified for the state baseball tournament with a 15-0 win over Canton Post 45 last week.

Despite a 4-5 record Head Coach Kasey Wilson's team will begin play Monday in Alpharetta. An opponent and time had not been decided as of press time.

Wilson decided to give his team a week off after last playing in early July.

"We gave the players a week off from baseball just to relax, recover and rebound and it paid off today," Wilson said.

The week off seemed to work wonders as Post 247 scored quickly and often against Canton.

Dawsonville jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning behind a massive homerun by Brett Westmoreland drove in three of the four runs.

Westmoreland finished the game with three hits.

Setting the tone early for Dawsonville was the defensive play of outfielder Tony Papale.

Papale made two textbook diving catches in the first inning to give Post 247 some momentum.

Behind the starting pitching of Dawson County High School graduate Jeffrey Partington, Post 247 cruised to an easy win.

Connor Pennington and Elijah Fitts came on in relief for Partington to finish up the game.

Only four hits were allowed by all three pitchers in nine innings of play.

"We have known all year if we pitched good and played errorless ball we were a good team," Wilson said.

Offensively Post 247 had several solid performances. Holden Brown went 2-for-2 with two walks, Papale, McClain Ramey and Clay McClure each had two hits.

Papale connected on a 2-run homer in the fourth, it was his sixth long ball of the season.
