Old Moonshiners of Georgia reunion Saturday

POSTED: July 17, 2013 4:00 a.m.

Throw on your Liberty overalls for the inaugural Old Moonshiners of Georgia Reunion on Saturday at the Dawsonville Municipal Complex.

Organizers are promising a day of food, singing, "pickin' and grinnin' with live music, a car show and demonstrations to showcase the state's moonshining heritage.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to meet some of Georgia's pioneer moonshiners and a few of the revenuers that chased them in the moonlight trying to shut down their illicit liquor business.

The festivities begin at noon and continue throughout the evening.

In its inaugural year, the reunion will be a memorial to Bill Pope, who started making corn liquor with his father at age 8 in 1931, and made his last batch in Dawsonville earlier this summer before his death June 14.

His granddaughter, Starla Landers, said the event will be a fitting tribute to his legacy as a moonshiner.

"Before he passed away, he had brought up the idea of getting the old moonshiners together. It's going to be an annual event to help keep his legacy alive," she said.

While the event is free, donations will be accepted and donated to the COPD Foundation in Pope's memory.
