Movies in the Park returns on Friday

POSTED: July 17, 2013 4:00 a.m.

Movies in the Park returns Friday when Northside Hospital and the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce present "Trouble with the Curve" under the stars at Dawson County Middle School's football field.

Partially filmed in Dawsonville, the Warner Brothers' production stars Clint Eastwood as an aging baseball scout who travels to Atlanta with his daughter to see a hot prospect.

Amy Adams and Justin Timberlake were also featured in the film and stayed at a local bed and breakfast during the shoot in March of last year.

"We are so proud that this film was partially shot right here in Dawson County," said Christie Haynes, president of the local chamber of commerce.

Dozens of onlookers camped out across from the Amicalola Lodge, where the scenes were shot, hoping to get a glimpse of Hollywood royalty.

Haynes said she hopes the community will help celebrate Dawsonville's place in Hollywood history by attending Friday night's free screening.

"Bring a blanket, a Frisbee and your whole family and see if you can pick out which scenes were filmed locally and enjoy a free evening of family fun," she said.

Georgia has been one of the country's leading locations for Hollywood film production for a couple of years, thanks to the tax breaks and incentives the state offers.

Passed in 2008, the Georgia Entertainment Industry Act gives production companies a 20 percent tax credit if the company spends a minimum of $500,000 on production and post-production in the state.

While it remains unclear how much Warner Brothers spent to film the scenes in Dawsonville, crews were seen purchasing construction equipment and supplies at a local home improvement warehouse.

Dawsonville's hospitality may also have played a role in a film crew's interest in the area for the popular "Hunger Games" sequel, "Catching Fire" earlier this year.

Stars Liam Hemsworth and Jennifer Lawrence, who are reprising their roles in the sequel, were both reportedly seen shopping at the outlet mall and at a local coffee shop while they were in town filming.
