Annual fireworks show rescheduled for Aug. 30

POSTED: July 10, 2013 4:00 a.m.

Plans are being made to kick off the Labor Day holiday weekend with fireworks, after storms last week washed out Dawson County's annual Sparks in the Park Independence celebration.

Organizers announced the morning of July 3 that the fireworks and activities scheduled for that night would be postponed until Aug. 30 due to the threat of heavy rain across north Georgia.

With 100 percent chance of showers and flash flood warnings July 3-5, Dawson County Parks and Recreation Director Lisa Henson said there were few alternatives to moving the festivities to later in the summer.

"Having the fireworks on Aug. 30, we'll have it out in front of the Labor Day holiday," she said. "So if people have plans, they'll still be able to come to the fireworks show before they head out of town.

"We're hoping this could be not only a Dawson County event, but a north Georgia event, because we'll be the only fireworks show that day."

In addition to rain washing out the Sparks in the Park activities, heavy downpours also caused minor damage to a metal pipe under Joe Chester Road in western Dawson County.

Crews made the emergency repairs and the road has since reopened, according to County Public Works Director Dave Headley.

Aside from issues with a few downed trees, emergency personnel said the holiday and weekend were quiet.

The wet weather most likely played a role in keeping many people off the roads, resulting in the low number of incidents throughout the county during the holiday period that begin at 6 p.m. July 3 and ran through midnight on Sunday, officials said.

Robin Stone with the Georgia State Patrol's Cumming Post said troopers worked six wrecks and made 31 traffic stops leading to 19 citations and 45 warnings in Dawson County during that time.

None of the citations were for driving under the influence, she said.
