Board decides to stay put

No changes in polling precincts

POSTED: June 21, 2013 2:39 p.m.

Despite talks of moving and grants, the Dawson County Board of Elections has decided not to move forward with changing poll locations for the west precinct.

The decision was reached during the June 17 meeting. After a lengthy discussion, the board voted 3-2 on Secretary Dan Pichon's motion to indefinitely table these discussions until further information is brought forward.

"I think we should table this indefinitely unless someone brings forth other information," Pichon said. "I don't see us having enough information to go forward with this. Why go from one place to another and spend money when we could only be using these places temporarily."

Vice Chairman Tom Foley seconded the motion that passed in a 3-2 vote. Chairwoman Glenda Ferguson and board member Charles Vincent voted in opposition of tabling the issue.

"We've always had issues at Station 6, one way or another," Ferguson said previously. "There have always been problems with heating and cooling the station, which is a manned station."

Voters on the county's west side currently cast their ballots at Fire Station No. 6 on Hubbard Road, near Big Canoe, and will continue to do so in the future.

The board decided not to use Fire Station No. 4, an unmanned, volunteer station in the Emma community, as an alternate voting location. This station is about five miles east of the current precinct.

"We should figure out where it is we want to be for polling locations instead of figuring out how much it costs to refurbish these fire stations where ideally we don't want to be there in the first place," board member Spencer Maddux said. "We want to have a polling place that's adequate in the east side as well as the west and central precincts. That's the thing I'd like to see us do first."
