The uncertain economy has hurt the housing industry in north Georgia, but the restaurant industry seems to be thriving, at least in Dawson County.

Several new restaurants, from fast food to high-end, have either opened, applied for permits or have begun the process of bringing new eateries to the county.

Construction is underway for a new Japanese steakhouse and sushi bar on property just south of Rite Aid on Ga. 400.

With locations in Woodstock, Buford, Duluth and Cumming, Kani House Japanese Steakhouse and Sushi serves traditional Japanese food cooked in front of patrons on a hibachi grill in the teppanyaki style, which include vegetables and fried rice and choice of seafood, chicken or steaks.

Just east of Ga. 400 at the intersection of War Hill Park Road and Hwy. 53, a new Mexican restaraunt opened in January. Taqueria La Morena specializes in authentic Mexican dishes and is open daily for lunch and dinner.

Keeping with an ethnic flair, Steve Holder, planning director for the city of Dawsonville, said the a contract has been signed to open an Italian style bistro in the new Food Lion shopping center in downtown Dawsonville. “They haven’t applied for permits yet, but he has signed a contract,” Holder said.

Recently, officials from Bojangle’s Famous Chicken and Biscuits were also reviewing a site for a freestanding restaurant adjacent to the city’s municipal complex, but Holder said nothing is certain.

Although no business plans have been submitted, the Krystal Company has applied for a variance for reduction of a landscape buffer on property between CVS Pharmacy and the Kangaroo gas station on Hwy. 53, west of Ga. 400. The variance request will be heard by the Dawson County Planning Commission at 6 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Dawsonville Municipal Complex, 415 Hwy. 53 East, Dawsonville.
