Dawson County Chamber of Commerce President Christie Haynes has been named to the Georgia Commission for Service and Volunteerism by Gov. Nathan Deal.

The commission serves to support and facilitate community developed service and volunteer activities.

Haynes will be joined by 18 other board members hand-picked by the governor for a three-year term. The board meets quarterly at the Department of Community Affairs in Atlanta.

"I'm honored and excited to have been appointed by Gov. Deal to serve on the Georgia Commission for Service and Volunteerism," Haynes said. "I look forward to representing Dawson County and the Northeast Georgia region on the board."

The commission's responsibilities are as follows: Preparing a state plan for national and community service; identifying needs for service, priorities and goals for the state's program; preparing procedures for applying for grants, reviewing and selecting grantees which propose programs consistent with the state's needs, priorities and goals; selecting proposed grantees and preparing an application to the federal agency which includes proposed grants, a program of technical assistance, and evaluation and monitoring program.

Haynes said she is looking forward to serving on the commission's board to help represent the Dawson County area on a state level.

"Serving our great state is a passion of mine and I am honored to serve a commission which has a goal of promoting more volunteerism throughout our state," she said.
