ASK THE EXPERTS

Boys have busy week

POSTED: June 12, 2013 4:00 a.m.

It was a busy week for Coach Thad Burgess and his Tiger basketball team.

Burgess' troops played in a team camp hosted by schools in Jackson County. The team played some good competition, which included Jefferson and Hart County.

"I am very pleased with our progress after a week of practice and four nights of games. I thought we competed extremely hard and gained a lot of confidence by beating perennial playoff and athletic teams in Jefferson and Hart County. We still have a long way to go," Burgess said.

The team will get back to practice this week so that they can correct any weaknesses that showed during last week's play before playing at the University of North Georgia this weekend.

The Tigers are trying something new this summer, which Burgess has been reluctant to do in the past. Dawson County is playing a regular rotating shift of 10 or 11 guys. Normally, Burgess would only play six and seven players during a game.

Burgess complemented the play of Sam Muenchen and Cameron Millholland.

"Both Cameron and Sam have caught on quickly and have performed well," Burgess said.

Experienced players such as Jonathan Sanderson, Lucas Pain, Jackson Putnam and Terrell Dawson seem more comfortable with the new rotation and all seem to be playing well, according to Burgess.

There are four newcomers to this year's varsity team: Jackson Morgan, Levi Whitmire, JT Eggert and Peyton Pruett played on sub-varsity teams last season.

"These guys have been learning on the run. It will take some time to get our chemistry going with all these players," Burgess added.
