ASK THE EXPERTS

Celebrity breakfast is Friday

POSTED: June 5, 2013 4:00 a.m.

Nearly a dozen local "celebrities" will don aprons for Dawson County Family Connection's fifth annual breakfast Friday. The event supports community efforts that benefit local children.

"This year, we're really trying to get the word out that this is for the entire community," said Nancy Stites, director for the nonprofit. "This is for families. It's about celebrating families and spending time with our families. We're all tied together to make Dawson County a great place for our children to grow up and be successful."

Part of a statewide initiative of community collaboratives, Family Connection bringing community partners together to develop, implement and evaluate plans that address the serious challenges facing local children and families.

More than 200 people attended last year's breakfast, which raised about $3,000.

Proceeds from the event benefit the group's many local initiatives such as its annual book bag drive, summer children's food program and Dawson Against Substance Abuse.

The "celebrity" wait staff will include county commissioners, city council members, several political candidates and a variety of volunteers from numerous service organizations.

Dawson County School Board member Doris Cook is one of nearly a dozen servers, though she laughs at being called a "local celebrity."

"I am happy to participate in this Family Connection fundraiser because this organization serves the needs of all children and brings a focus on family issues. They truly are the connection between school and community," she said.

"As a school board member, it is important to put our kids first and do what is best for them, and Family Connection is at the heart of it, doing what is best for our kids and families always."

A barbershop quartet, local guitarist Chris Maher, face painting and an appearance from Hee Haw's comedic matriarch "Minnie Pearl" are among the event's entertainment.

The buffet breakfast at LongHorn Steakhouse in Dawsonville is $10 per person and will be available from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. for dine in, carry out and delivery along the Ga. 400 corridor.

Tickets are available the morning of the event and at the Family Connection office at 189 Hwy. 53 West, Suite 105. Tickets can also be purchased from Family Connection board members.
