The American Legion Post 247 baseball team opened the season on Sunday with a 9-8 victory over Peachtree City in a game played in Dawsonville.

Dawson County High graduate Jeffrey Partington started the game for coach Kasey Wilson's team.

Peachtree City opened up a 4-0 lead after two innings. Partington settled down at that point and pitched seven strong innings.

Post 247 cut Peachtree City's lead to 4-1 in the second inning when North Forsyth's Tony Papale slammed a homer.

With bad weather approaching, Post 247 finally tied the score at 6-6 in the seventh inning. Clay McClure hit a shot off the center field fence and a hit from Marlin Hensley helped the rally.

Peachtree City answered in the top of the eighth inning. The team scored two runs to go ahead 8-6.

Wilson's team tied the game in the ninth inning with dark clouds approaching.

McClure and Hensley singled and a sacrifice bunt from Blake Thomas helped Post 247 to tie the score at 8-8.

As the rain began, and with the winning run at third, Peachtree City changed their pitcher and catcher in what seemed to be an attempt to stall for time.

Lumpkin County's Holden Brown singled up the middle, to drive in the winning run just as the rain began to fall.

Quentin Sears, McClure and Hensley had multi-hit games. Thomas pitched the eighth inning to pick up the win from the mound.

"All in all I'm very proud of our players for staying in the game and chipping away," Wilson said. "I am very optimistic about this year's team. It is one of the most talented teams we have had at Post 247. We have seven guys committed to colleges, which is the most we have had on any team and we are still expecting two or three more to possibly sign this summer."

Committed to play at the next level are: McClure, Point University, Thomas, Truett-McConnell, Brett Westmoreland, Young Harris, David Chester, Georgia Highlands, Hensley, Georgia Highlands, Tony Papale, Piedmont College and McClain Ramey, Truett McConnell.

Up next for Post 247 will be an 11 a.m. game Saturday against Buford at home.
