ASK THE EXPERTS

Man killed by Bobcat in accident

POSTED: May 29, 2013 4:00 a.m.

A 60-year-old man was killed Saturday in what authorities described as a machinery accident at his shop in downtown Dawsonville.

According to emergency workers, Jack "Red" Young died from injuries suffered in the incident, which occurred about 3 p.m.

"It appears he was trapped between a loader of a Bobcat," said Dawson County Emergency Services Director Billy Thurmond.

The death was one of two major incidents over the long Memorial Day weekend.

In the second, a stretch of Ga. 400 was shut down for a short time about 9 p.m. Sunday after a four-wheeler crashed on Frederick's Cove near the Lumpkin County line.

Neither of the two people aboard the vehicle - a 16-year-old girl from Duluth and her 15-year-old passenger, a Dawson County girl - were wearing helmets, according to Thurmond.

"They were both ejected when the four-wheeler overturned," he said.

The driver was in critical condition when flown that night to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta.

Her condition could not be determined Tuesday afternoon.

The passenger was treated at the scene for what was described as "road rash to her upper extremities" and released, according to spokeswoman with the Georgia State Patrol.

Aside from those two incidents, Thurmond said local emergency workers had an otherwise uneventful holiday weekend.
