Gainesville man charged with entering vehicles in parking lots

POSTED: February 4, 2009 4:00 a.m.

Local authorities are warning individuals to use caution when leaving valuables inside cars.

Theft charges continue to mount against Bobby Lenard Hausner, 29, of Gainesville, who was taken into custody Friday after investigators learned he had used a credit card stolen from a car in the Applebee’s parking lot in Dawson County.

Hausner currently faces one count each of theft by taking, criminal trespass and entering an auto in connection with the Jan. 7 incident.

Authorities believe additional charges will follow once the case is taken to a grand jury.

Hausner was apprehended after Investigator Jimmi Smith was able to identify him from store surveillance in Forsyth County.

Smith reportedly circulated the photo throughout the sheriff’s office, which led to an employee recognizing the subject in the photo as Hausner. Hausner was arrested a short time later at a residence in Hall County.

“Through this investigation Smith learned that Mr. Hausner allegedly targeted vehicles belonging to employees of businesses and sought out vehicles in which items were in plain view,” Wooten said. “He’d look for vehicles of employees who wouldn’t be back to their cars as often as shoppers would be.”

Hausner has reportedly met with investigators with the Dawson County District Attorney’s Office and discussed several additional similar thefts in Dawson and Hall counties, according to Wooten.

“We have connected him to four in Dawson and seven in Hall County,”  Wooten said.

Hausner remains in Dawson County Sheriff’s custody without bond, according to jail records.
