A Dawsonville man was arrested Monday morning after he reportedly attempted to set fire to his home on Duck Thurmond Road last week.

According to the Dawson County Sheriff's Office, Michael Glenn Odum has been charged with criminal attempt to commit arson, reckless conduct and second-degree criminal damage to property.

He is being held at the Dawson County Detention Center, where jail records show that bond has not been set.

Authorities said Odum, 42, reportedly poured a flammable accelerant in the kitchen and around the outside of the mobile home on May 8 before telling his wife and a teenager to leave.

"He told them he was going to burn down the house and left," said Dawson County Sheriff's Maj. Tony Wooten.

"He came back a few minutes later and that's when he actually started pouring the gasoline. That's when the witness said he was telling them to get out of the house."

According to Dawson County Fire Marshal Tim Satterfield, the sheriff's deputies sent to investigate a 911 call detected the odor of gasoline inside and outside the home.

"We took samples of what appeared to be an accelerant around the house," he said. "From witness statements and the odor, it appeared to be gasoline."

According to Satterfield, the accelerant was never ignited. The samples were sent to Georgia Bureau of Investigation for analysis.

Odum was arrested early Monday after he reportedly asked the sheriff's office if a deputy could accompany him to the home to pick up personal items.

"Obviously, those officers knew he had warrants and took him into custody," Wooten said.

It is the fourth arson-related case Satterfield's office has handled this year.

"We've made four arrests on two of the four investigations," he said.
