Cancer survivors, their families and supporters will gather Thursday at Dawson County High School to celebrate survival.

Relay for Life of Dawson County will be holding its annual Survivor Dinner Celebration from 6 to 8 p.m. at the high school. According to Andrea Shoemaker, community manager for Dawson County Relay for Life, the 12-year strong event is held to "bring cancer survivors together in celebration of their success in beating cancer."

"We consider people a survivor if they have been diagnosed with cancer and whether that was yesterday or 20 years ago, we consider them all, a survivor," Shoemaker said. "It is quite moving to meet every survivor."

Shoemaker also said that the Relay for Life event itself is just around the corner.

"Relay is coming quickly. Calendar it now [for] Friday, April 26 at Veteran's Memorial Park from 5:30 to 11:30 p.m.," she said. "Our theme, ‘Tooning out Cancer!'," is cartoons, and it is sure to be an amazing event."

Currently there are 28 relay teams, 350 participants and Dawson County has raised more than $28,000 toward a $90,000 goal.
