Event brings three groups to the stage

POSTED: January 28, 2009 4:00 a.m.

Dawson County residents are invited to bop around the clock in penny loafers and poodle skirts at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12 during the The Great American Rock and Roll Revival.

Sponsored by The Dawson County Arts Council, the show is appropriate for all ages and will be held at the Lakeview Center.

Tickets are $25 per person, and can be purchased by calling The Bowen Center for the Arts at (706) 216-2787 or by stopping by the center at 334 Hwy. 9 North, Dawsonville.

The show will feature performances from Elvis tribute artist Damon Hendrix, the Sock Hops, and Butch and the Buckheads.

The Great American Rock and Roll Revival is a touring group, made up of the three Georgia groups, that has been performing together for five years. The tour entertains sold out shows with “ol’ time rock and roll” music from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.

At just 29 years old, Damon Hendrix is known for looking, sounding and moving like “the king.”

Voted the No. 1 Elvis Tribute artist in the “E” Festival in Cornelia, Hendrix performs to more than 100 sold out shows per year, throughout the Southeast.

The “Sock Hops” are a returning group that has previously performed in Dawson County.

This five piece vocal group has entertained for 13 years and has made appearances with other famous groups such as 3-Dog Night and The Temptations.

The group performs vocals that cover music from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, with songs ranging in genres from do wop to classic rock and roll.

Butch and the Buckheads are an internationally known group from Atlanta that has been performing “ol’ time rock and roll” for more than 20 years.

They have also appeared with famous artists like The Impressions and Frankie Avalon.

Excited about the event, Marcia Chelf, director at The Bowen Center for the Arts, said she was dusting off her poodle skirt.

“I am really looking forward to this event,” she said.

“The Sock Hops put on a good show when they were here last year,” said Judy Baer, arts council board member.

“Adding two more acts will, I’m sure, make an excellent show,” she added.
