DCSO offers women’s self-defense course

POSTED: April 10, 2013 4:00 a.m.

A free course designed to teach women basic self-defense tips will be taught at Robinson Elementary School.

Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Ray Goodie said the three-hour course, which runs from 9 a.m. to noon April 20, will give women hands-on experience to fight off attackers.

"The month of April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, so we want to raise public awareness about sexual violence and educate our community members on ways they can prevent sexual violence," he said.

Trained in martial arts with a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, Goodie is certified as a pressure point control techniques defensive tactics instructor.

"Most of what I'll be showing and focusing on skills that will help a female repel or fight off an attacker or sexual predator," he said. "We'll be teaching simple techniques that are quick, easy and efficient designed to get the sexual predator or attacker subdued long enough for the victim to get away."

The course will incorporate technique from mixed martial arts and Tae Kwon Do, as well as pressure point control.

"We'll show them how to break a hold, where to punch, hit or kick, and basically, stun the attacker. These are techniques to use that would make it to where the attacker couldn't chase or hold on to or hold down the victim," he said.

For more information or to register for the class, call Maj. Tony Wooten at (706) 344-3535, Ext. 20081.
