A talented Riverview Middle boys soccer team went into the recent championship game with a lot of confidence.

Coach Patrick Johnston's team defeated Pickens 4-1 in the semi-finals to force a match-up with Clear Creek Middle School in the championship game March 28.

The game marked the third time the two teams had met this season with Riverview coming out on top on each occasion.

"It's difficult to beat a team three times in a row," Johnston said. "The second time we played them we had to score late to pull out the win. Clear Creek was hungry for revenge."

The Bobcats dominated time of possession and played on Riverview's end of the field for the majority of the game.

Clear Creek came out on top, 2-0 to take the championship.

"We were outplayed during the game. They were beating us to the ball. We had a few opportunities, but didn't capitalize. We had some injuries and illnesses and had to readjust our formation. The boys weren't comfortable on the field and it showed by how timid they were," Johnston said.

The Bobcats scored with 13:36 remaining in the first half. A scramble in front of the Riverview net found the foot of a Clear Creek player who deposited the ball in the back of the net.

Clear Creek put the dagger in with 13:23 left in the game. A penalty was called on the Riverview goalie just inside the far corner line resulting in a penalty kick.

It was the only two goals the Bobcats needed to secure the win.

"It's been a great season despite not getting the finish we wanted. The boys wanted to play well to honor Coach [Phil] Branson, and they did that this season. They've laughed, cried, mourned and celebrated together. They've developed a bond that I hope carries with them throughout the rest of their lives."

Riverview finished the season with a 10-2 record.
