Special Olympic Games comes to Dawson County

POSTED: April 3, 2013 4:00 a.m.

Athletes from both Dawson and Lumpkin counties will gather next week at Riverview Middle School to compete in this year's Special Olympics.

The games will be held for the first time at the school from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. April 10 at the middle school.

The Special Olympic Games, which focus on providing athletic training and competition for children and adults with disabilities, is mostly run through the work of volunteers.

"I hope that the community will become involved and supportive towards Special Olympics," said Tricia Owenby, Dawson County Special Olympics coordinator. "I also hope that the community becomes more aware of the needs in the community in relation to Special Olympics. It takes a lot to put this together."

Owenby said that the participants in these games are fueled by the support of their respective communities.

"Sometimes the only support from the community these athletes get are from their parents or their teachers," she said. "This is a day to focus just on these athletes and they deserve it. It is such a blessing to watch these kids' faces light up as they receive their awards."

Anyone interested in volunteering or making donations, can contact Owenby by e-mail at towenby@dawson.k12.ga.us or by phone at (706) 265-3246, Ext. 1007.
