Each year, one Certified Literate Community Program director is selected among every other in the state to win the Georgia Press Association Award of Excellence in CLCP award.

R.E.A.D. executive director Sandy Lipkowitz has been named the 2013 award recipient.

Lipkowitz received the award March 20 at the Georgia Press Association's retreat dinner.

"Thank you to everyone for your support and to those who wrote recommendation letters," Lipkowitz said. "It's an honor. It's only because the wonderful R.E.A.D. board members and what they do that I will get this award."

Award candidates are selected by nomination only.

Lipkowitz was nominated by Brenda Thomas, associate vice president of adult education at Lanier Technical College.

"I instigate the process. There are several letters that must be sent first," Thomas said. "Sandy does a fantastic job of pulling everyone together. She's just full of creative energy and passion. She is truly a blessing in every way."

Along with the award, the winner also receives a $1,000 donation to their program.

"The award brings a $1,000 donation to R.E.A.D., which brings recovery to Dawson County, which is wonderful," Lipkowitz said. "This helps R.E.A.D. create a better literacy program in the community."

Lipkowitz said that she is honored that R.E.A.D.'s work has been recognized and was chosen to be honored with a state award.

The award banquet was held at the Cobb Galleria.
