Jerri Greer of Dawson County High School was named Outstanding Teacher Of The Year in the Exceptional Students Department during a recent board of education meeting.

The Department of Exceptional Students of the Dawson County Board of Education plans to make this an annual award, this year marking the inaugural year.

“She was chosen because she accepts all her responsibilities and goes above and beyond what is required of her,” said Dr. Lonnie Trahan-Dikowski, director of the exceptional students program for Dawson County.

“I am so grateful to have such capable teachers working in our department,” Trahan-Dikowski added.

Greer recently received a Masters Degree in Education from North Georgia College and State University in Dahlonega.

While earning her Masters, Greer did an extensive study on high school math performance and several different interventions that can be implemented in the classroom for struggling math students.

Greer composed a paper about 30 pages in length that brings together all the components and information of her study and the different interventions into one literature review.

Through correspondence with a professor, Greer said she was “pleasantly surprised when my professor told me it was one the best literature reviews she had ever read, and suggested some ways of how I could go about getting it published.”

Greer is currently in the process of having her literature review published.

Upon obtaining her Masters degree, Greer began taking classes to work towards getting a Specialist’s Degree in Education.

This is Greer’s fourth year as an exceptional student teacher at Dawson County High School.

“I love my kids,” said Greer. “The people and staff that I work with are fantastic, and I am very appreciative of the award.”
