ASK THE EXPERTS

Boys take tourney

POSTED: March 19, 2013 5:08 p.m.

The Dawson County boys soccer team traveled to Jekyll Island over the weekend and proved why it is ranked No. 4 in Class AAA.

The Tigers didn't give up a goal as the team defeated Cedar Shoals, 3-0, Brunswick, 5-0 and Richmond Academy, 6-0, at the Tournament of Champions event.

"What a great week down in Jekyll," said head coach Jed Lacey. "We came down here to have fun and to win three games and we did both. We are getting ready to go into region play [this] week so we were evaluating everyone to know who will be in our rotation for our run at state."

In Thursday's game against Cedar Shoals, the Tigers held a slim 1-0 lead at halftime with a goal by Sal Mendoza. Dawson put the game away over the last 40 minutes with goals by Josh Lund and Jose Miranda.

Dawson jumped out quickly against Brunswick on Friday to establish a 3-0 advantage after the first 40 minutes of play. Scoring in the first half were Josh Lund, Brandon Lund and Miranda.

The Tigers continued to pour on the offensive pressure in the second half with goals by Josh Lund and Sam Muenchen to take the 5-0 win.

Saturday's game was more of the same as the Tigers dominated all facets of the game and jumped out to a 3-0 halftime lead against Richmond Academy.

Lacey's team added three more goals in the second half for the 6-0 victory. Five different players did the scoring for the Tigers led by Miranda (two goals), Muenchen, Josh Lund, Cole Edwards and Brandon Lund.

Josh Lund has now scored 10 goals this season for the Tigers.

Goalie Brooks Fulford recorded his seventh shutout of the season. The Tigers haven't been scored upon this season.

"It wasn't who scored, but the team play that was tremendous. We are hitting on all cylinders and we came away with no serious injuries. I cannot ask for any more than that," Lacey said.

Up next for the Tigers is a home match against White County at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
