Woman killed in wreck

County’s third death on the roads in 2013

POSTED: March 20, 2013 4:00 a.m.

A wreck on War Hill Park Road claimed the life of a Dawson County woman Saturday night.

Emergency officials said Edna Gazaway, 81, was traveling alone when her 2009 Chevrolet HHR left the road before clipping a mailbox, a stop sign and landing on its right side.

"Her airbag did deploy, but she was not wearing a seat belt," said a spokeswoman with Georgia State Patrol Post 37 in Cumming.

The wreck occurred about 9 p.m. near Clark Road and just a few hundred feet from Gazaway's home.

No other vehicles were involved, and speed was believed to be a factor, according to the state patrol.

Saturday's wreck marked the county's second traffic fatality of 2013, and the third death on Dawson County roads, all of which have happened this month.

Clayton Patterson, 69, of Dahlonega died from injuries in a single-vehicle crash March 3 on Ga. 400 near the Lumpkin County line.

Patterson also was not wearing a seat belt when his southbound 2003 Jeep Liberty left the highway in a curve and flipped several times near Landrum Road.

The next day, emergency workers also responded to a wreck in the parking lot of Arby's in which the driver later died.

Dawson County Emergency Services Director Billy Thurmond said James Nowell, 68, of Dawsonville had a "medical issue" while driving. He was pronounced dead a short time later at Northside Hospital-Forsyth.

Nowell's death is "not considered a traffic fatality," according to Thurmond.

The state patrol, which has worked seven fatalities this month in Forsyth, Dawson and Lumpkin counties, cautions drivers to be vigilant by slowing down, paying attention and wearing their seat belts.
