Art showcases kids of all ages

POSTED: March 13, 2013 9:04 a.m.

With last week being proclaimed Exceptional Children's Week by Mayor James Grogan, Dawson County schools have gathered work from several young artists across the county to showcase their skills.

The March 8 show, which was held at the Dawson County Library, displayed art and writing from special needs students ranging from elementary, middle and high school levels.

"I would just like to congratulate all of the children who participated in celebrating Exceptional Children's Week with an entry," said event coordinator Pam Gross. "Their hard work has been admired and appreciated. All of the participants will be recognized by receiving certificates and medals."

Gross said the show has been held since 2007 starting with art and incorporating writing after 2009.

Exceptional Children's Week is a 90-year tradition.

This year's theme was titled "90 Years Exceptionally Connected."

"I think art gives all kids a way to express their creativity, but I think being able to participate in this each year, I think it helps them be able to participate in competition and build focus for school work," said Susan Rutherford, director of special education for Dawson County Schools. "It helps them use their skills for a purpose."

The judging of the art and writing entries took place at the library. This year's judges included Grogan, board of education members Doris Cook and Elaine Wilson, Bowen Arts Center's Marcia Chelf and columnist and retired educator Helen Taylor.

The winning entries are currently on display at city hall and will remain on display until after Spring Break.
