Boys team is ranked 6th in class

POSTED: February 26, 2013 4:57 p.m.

The Dawson County High School varsity boys soccer program is currently ranked No. 6 in Class AAA.

The ranking is the highest ever held by the boys' program according to head coach Jed Lacey.

The team dominated in its Feb. 20 game against visiting East Jackson.

The Tigers scored four, first half goals and added three more in the second half to come away with a 7-0 victory.

The game was a welcome revenge for the Tigers. Last season, East Jackson defeated the Tigers, 2-1.

"I think the players just wanted to let East Jackson know who we really are this season," Lacey said.

Sal Mendoza scored the opening goal at the 29:17 mark off an assist by Josh Lund.

Cole Edwards added a second goal only two minutes later on a pass from Jose Miranda.

It was Edwards' third goal of the season.

Two more goals found the back of the net by Josh Lund and Randy Schultz before the halftime intermission. Lund's goal came on a corner kick with 14:07 left in the first half.

Josh Lund, Jose Miranda and Austin Stewart would score in the second half to make the final 7-0. Miranda's goal came on a free kick.

Goalie Brooks Fulford recorded his second shutout this season.

"I really like how we are playing right now. We are playing smart and working hard as a team," Lacey said.

"We are getting great play out of our forwards right now and our midfield is really good, led by senior Jose Miranda, everything is falling into place to make our run at state," Lacey said.

Dawson County is currently 2-0 on the season.

The Tigers will play at Towns County on Friday.
