Preparing for emergencies topic of annual meeting

POSTED: February 13, 2013 4:00 a.m.

Emergency preparedness will be the topic of discussion Saturday at the Dawson County's Homeowners Civic Association annual membership meeting.

Guest speakers Dawson County Sheriff Billy Carlisle and Emergency Services Director Billy Thurmond are scheduled to outline the county's emergency management plans, as well as answer questions.

Jane Graves, the group's president, described the topic "as a timely reminder of what our county plans for in the wake of some of the worst human and climatic disasters our nation has witnessed and how to plan for our own family's safety at home before the unpredictable happen."

In addition to electing officers, the annual meeting also serves as a time to honor a local individual's community involvement efforts.

The Dawson County Homeowners Association is a nonpartisan advocacy group that provides a vehicle for individuals and groups to address concerns with elected or appointed county officials in an effort to achieve positive benefits for the community, according to its Web site.

The group is also asking attendees to bring nonperishable food donations that will be added to RIC Rack's food pantry.

Doors at the Community and Southern Bank community room in downtown Dawsonville open at 9:30 a.m. with the business meeting starting at 10 a.m.
