Dawson County High School varsity girls' basketball team is headed in the right direction coming into the Region 7-AAA tournament this week.

The Lady Tigers, coached by Steve Sweat, won their final two regular season games. The team defeated North Hall, 66-61, on Feb. 5, and finished the regular season with a decisive 70-32 win in Oakwood against West Hall on Feb. 8.

Dawson County finished the regular season with a 21-4 overall record and are 10-4 in region play.

The team is the No. 2 seed going into this week's region tournament. The team will play host to East Hall at 7 p.m. tonight.

The Lady Tigers have defeated East Hall twice this season: Once by a score of 65-52 and then by a score of 64-50.

The Feb. 5 game saw senior Carly Gilreath score a game-high 23 points in the win over North Hall.

Gilreath came up big in the second half, recording 15 points in the final two quarters of play.

Gilreath hit a shot in the lane with 3:15 remaining after North had pulled within two points. She then hit another shot with 30 seconds left to help Dawson County hold on for the win.

"Being the point guard you're the leader on the floor, especially in tough situations," Gilreath said. "Coach Sweat has always said at the end of the game that he wants the ball in my hands."

"In years past it might have been better," Sweat said. "But the way the region has been this year, except for Buford at No. 1, everybody has shown they can beat everybody."

Sophomore post player Sheyenne Seabolt also had a big night offensively for the Lady Tigers. Seabolt added 19 points in the victory. She also pulled down six rebounds.

Tiger sophomore Ashley Parker also scored in double digits with 12 points. She also pulled down seven rebounds.

Dawson County had a big advantage on the boards. The team out-rebounded North Hall 33-25.

"The game was just like we expected tonight. It was a game of runs by both teams. It was a very hard fought battle between two teams who really wanted a win," Sweat said.

Rounding out the scoring were Kacie Bearden with six points; Kenna Seitz scored four points and Karlie Bearden scored two points.

"What a great win for our seniors on Senior Night and to hopefully clinch second place in a very tough region. It is also a great season anytime you can get 20 wins," Sweat said.

In Friday's game at West Hall the Lady Tigers dominated from the opening tip. Sweat's team opened up a 33-8 halftime lead and never looked back.

Gilreath had another big night offensively. She led the scoring with 25 points.

Allie Costley and Kacie Bearden added 14 and 10 points respectively. Costley also tallied seven rebounds.

Finishing the scoring for the Lady Tigers were Seabolt with nine points, Parker added six points, Karlie Bearden, Hannah Porter and Haley Burgess contributed with two points each.

Seabolt had nine rebounds in the contest.
