Tigers take close one over Johnson

POSTED: February 12, 2013 3:57 p.m.

Dawson County High School head soccer coach Jed Lacey got a great look at the 2013 edition of his varsity boys soccer team in an exhibition win over a talented Johnson team, 5-4, last week.

Johnson is currently ranked No. 6 in Class AA in the preseason coach's poll. The Tigers are also ranked. The team is currently No. 10 in Class AAA.

Josh Lund scored a hat trick for the Tigers. Lund scored the opening goal just four minutes into the game and added another goal just before halftime as Dawson County led 2-1 at intermission.

Both goals were on assists by Brandon Lund.

The Tigers added three more scores during the final 40 minutes, one by Jose Miranda on a penalty kick, Brandon Lund, and Josh Lund's third goal with only 1:57 remaining in the contest.

"We brought Johnson in to find out how good we are and what we will need to fix after they would expose any weaknesses we have. What we got was one of the best games of the year. Johnson is one of the best Class AA soccer schools in the state," Lacey said.

Lacey said he expects big things out of Tiger Josh Lund this season.

"Josh Lund came into his own tonight with a three-goal game, which two of them might be the highlights of the whole season. The header he put in from the pass he got from Brandon, his brother, was so created by both players. Brandon's skill and Josh's ups made one of the prettiest plays I have ever seen," he said.

Lacey said the team's effort also stood out during the exhibition game.

"What I got to see is a team that will not back down, and losing is not going to be a part of their DNA. This team is hungry. We have some real speed and gifted players. To make this team work and go where we want to go at the end of the season, some players are going to have to make some sacrifices," Lacey added.

The Tigers will play their first regular season game at 7:30 p.m. Friday at home against Rabun County.
