Middle school boys lose thriller

POSTED: January 29, 2013 4:39 p.m.

The Riverview Middle School eighth grade Eagles' basketball team played an exciting game against Pickens County Middle School Jan. 18 at home.

Despite a spirited effort, the Eagles came up on the short end of a 28-27 defeat.

With the loss, the team's record fell to 1-9 on the season.

The Eagles had a final shot with three seconds to go on a wide open three-pointer but the attempt came up short as the final buzzer sounded.

Pickens and Riverview played the game close throughout with neither team holding more than a three-point lead.

Riverview held a slight 19-18 advantage after three quarters, but the Dragons scored one more basket in the final quarter to pull out the victory.

Barry Thurmond and Evan Jennings led Riverview in scoring with nine points each.

Eagle Jake Gloeckner added six points.

Thurmond also pulled down eight rebounds for his team.

The Eagles will play in the Mountain League Tournament at Clear Creek Middle School this week.
