No charges in shooting

Employee recovering after accident at shop

Charges will not be filed in what authorities have ruled an accidental shooting last week at Dawsonville Gun and Pawn on Hwy. 53 near Ga. 400.

"It was an accident," said Dawson County Sheriff's Capt. Ray Goodie.

The 58-year-old employee who was shot when a firearm discharged before noon on Jan. 23 continues to recover, according to officials.

Authorities said a second employee was attempting to break down a handgun brought in by a customer when the Ruger semi-automatic pistol misfired, sending a 9mm bullet into the woman's upper thigh.

The Lumpkin County woman, whose name was not released, was taken by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville in stable condition, according to Dawson County Emergency Services Chief Lanier Swafford. She was released later that day.

As of Tuesday, messages left with the gun and pawn shop seeking comment had not been returned.

The store, which remained closed the remainder of Jan. 23, reopened the next day.

Postings from customers on its social media page asked if the store would put measures in place to safeguard against future incidents.

"Accidents can happen to anyone, at any time," wrote one commenter. "A guard with a 55 [gallon] barrel filled with sand or water used for clearing any and all firearms brought into the store would be a great start. As we say in the Marine Corps, ‘Safety policies are written in blood.'"
