Girls defeat Buford

POSTED: January 15, 2013 4:39 p.m.

The Dawson County High School junior varsity Lady Tiger basketball team used a strong second half to defeat Buford, 40-38, last week.

Dawson County trailed by nine points at halftime, 23-14, of the Jan. 8 game.

Coach Anne Hyams' team's offense came alive in the third quarter to outscore the Lady Wolves, 16-4, to hold a slim, 30-27, advantage.

It was back and forth in the fourth quarter with Buford outscoring Dawson County, 11-10, but it wasn't enough with the Lady Tigers pulling out a close win.

Jordan Moore and Brooke Wende led Dawson County in scoring with 10 points each. Moore connected on three, 3-pointers.

Tabitha Morrison was next on offense with seven points.

Peytan Porter hit two big 3-pointers in the second half for six points.

Haley Burgess added five points and Ansley Costley scored two points in the win.

"We faced a tougher team and the girls elevated their level of play in the third and fourth quarters. After being down by nine points in the first half. Our players refused to give up and continued to play hard the entire game," Hyams said.

The junior varsity Lady Tigers will play at 4 p.m. Friday at home against Fannin County.
