Tigers take down East Hall

POSTED: January 8, 2013 3:45 p.m.

Will Anglin hit five three-pointers to lead Dawson County to a 51-43 win at East Hall on Friday.

Dawson County remains perfect with a 14-0 record and the Tigers are 4-0 in Region 7-AAA.

The team's start is the best in school history dating back to the 1960s.

Anglin was having a standout night for the Tigers before he picked up a pair of technical fouls and was ejected from the game.

Due to the ejection, he was required to sit out one game - Tuesday's game against Buford, which scores were not available for as of press time.

After the Anglin ejection the Vikings went on a run until Tiger junior Jackson Putnam hit a pair of three-pointers that seemed to take the air out of East Hall.

With the loss East Hall fell to 3-9 and 0-4 in region play.

"I was just so proud of our guys," Burgess said. "When Anglin went out of the game, I saw us step up. Putnam came in and played well - he came in and gave us some fire - and we just found a way."

Senior Tyler Dominy hit two key free throws with 2:43 left in the fourth to cap a 6-0 run after East Hall had come back to tie it at 39 on a Jacquen Hopkins 3-pointer.

While East Hall got back within two points after a jump shot by Brian Gregory, junior Lucas Pain (eight points) finished a six-point fourth quarter with a lay-up to put Dawson County ahead 47-43 with 1:10 remaining.

Putnam and Gunnar Armstrong each went 2 for 2 from the free throw line to seal the win.

Putnam finished with eight points, Camron Chester added nine and Dominy finished with a team-high 15 rebounds and four points.

Also scoring was Lucas Pain with eight points, Gunnar Armstrong with five points and Jonathan Sanderson with two points.

Sanderson also had eight rebounds and six assists.

East Hall was led in scoring by Daniel McCreavy with eight points and Eddie Holtzclaw with seven points.

"A win versus East Hall is always special, and to beat them there, really shows the effort our guys put forth. The Dawson community filled our side and gave us that extra lift in the fourth quarter when we got down by four and things were going East Hall's way," Burgess said.

"Although Tyler [Dominy] and Gunnar [Armstrong] scored only four and five points, they had tremendous games with Tyler rebounding and Gunnar having a tremendous all-around game. Jonathan [Sanderson] never came out of the game and took the waves of players and pressure that East Hall throws at you. Camron Chester has really stepped up his game and has been the big presence inside that we were so badly looking for. And Lucas [Pain] and Jackson [Putnam] have been our sparks off the bench and played really well," he added.

Tigers take Battle of State tournament

During the holiday break, the team won the Battle of the States tournament at Towns County High School.

The Tigers defeated Murphy, N.C., 62-22, in the final game to take the championship trophy.

In the semi-final game the Tigers won against Hayesville, N.C., 39-25, to advance.

Dominy was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Teammate Anglin was voted to the All-Tournament team.

Burgess' team jumped out to an 18-5 first quarter lead and never backed down.

The Tigers held a 27-8 halftime advantage and cruised home to take the victory.

Anglin had a huge game offensively. He scored a game-high 26 points.

Also scoring for Dawson County were: Chester - eight points; Dominy - seven points; Armstrong - six points; Pain - five points; Dawson and Putnam - three points each; Stanfill and Whitmire contributed two points each.
