Woman hurt in wreck dies

POSTED: December 12, 2012 4:00 a.m.

A Dawsonville woman hospitalized last month after a head-on collision on Hwy. 53 near the Dawson-Forsyth County line has died.

Funeral services for Fredina Marie Elrod were held Sunday in the chapel of Bearden Funeral Home.

Elrod, who died Dec. 6 at age 62, had been hospitalized since the Nov. 14 wreck that also injured three of her grandchildren.

According to a Georgia State Patrol spokeswoman, Elrod was traveling west on Hwy. 53 toward Dawsonville when the KIA Forte she was driving crossed the centerline in a sharp curve and collided with a pickup driven by Eugene Hintz, 48, of Cumming.

Dawson County Coroner Ted Bearden said she was initially taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment, but was later transferred to Atlanta Medical Center and then Emory Crawford Long.

"She went through a steady decline once hospitalized," he said. "The wreck wasn't the direct cause of her death, but her passing can be traced back to the wreck, indirectly."

Elrod is survived by sons Jimmy and Joshua Elrod and Joey Almond, all of Dawsonville, daughters and sons-in-law, Tina Schandera, Tia and Thomas Chastain, all of Dawsonville, Robin Elrod and Michael Stansbury of Flowery Branch, 21 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

A member of Rock Hill Congregational Church, Elrod had been employed at Walmart in Dawsonville, where she had worked as a cashier since its opening.

Elrod is the fourth fatality on Dawson County roads in 2012. There were four traffic-related deaths last year.
