Board names additional finalists

County manager vote may come Dec. 20

POSTED: December 5, 2012 4:00 a.m.

Two more names have been added to the list of internal candidates being considered for the Dawson County manager position.

County commissioners voted on Thursday to expand the list to include Cindy Campbell and David McKee.

The commission had previously announced that the county's next chief executive officer would be promoted from within and named three internal candidates as finalists to replace County Manager Kevin Tanner.
Tanner, who was elected to the Georgia Legislature in July, is leaving the manager's post at the end of the year. He has held it since 2008.

Campbell currently serves as the county's chief financial officer, while McKee is director of planning and development.

Their names will be added to the list that includes Director of Public Works and Community Development David Headley, Director of Administration Bob Ivey and Director of Emergency Services Billy Thurmond.

Commissioners said they owe it to the public to consider all possibilities in identifying the ideal candidate for the county's top non-elected position.

"This is the hardest decision I've had to make as a commissioner," said James Swafford, who represents the county's second district. "It's one that we are taking very serious."

Commissioners last month voted to reopen the original application period in an effort to give "every one of our very capable employees who want to apply for this position that opportunity," Commissioner Gary Pichon said at the time.

According to Pichon, the three who initially applied remain finalists for the job.

"There is no indication on our part that that has changed," he said.

The commission is required to advertise the names of the finalists before voting on the matter.

The position was not open to outside candidates.
