Teamwork paying off for JV ladies

POSTED: December 4, 2012 4:32 p.m.

Coach Anne Hyams junior varsity girls' basketball team opened the season with two wins last week.

The Lady Tigers defeated Lumpkin County in two games.

On Nov. 27, Dawson County traveled to Dahlonega and came away with a 45-11 victory. The team followed that with a 46-10 dredging of the same team on Saturday at home.

Dawson County jumped out to a 13-0 lead after one quarter of play on Tuesday.

The lead expanded to 38-9 after three quarters of play behind the pinpoint shooting of guard Haley Burgess.

Burgess connected on four three-pointers in the quarter; she had five three-pointers for the game.

Finishing out the scoring for the Lady Tigers were: Summer Vaughn with 7 points, Emily Queen, Eliza Sillesky and Jordan Moore with 4 points each. Brooke Wende, Tabitha Morrison, Lauren Burgess, Peytan Porter and Heather Brady rounded out the scoring with 2 points each.

"I was pleased with the team's effort while we were pressing our opponent," Hyams said. "However, we need to work on gaining better position to reduce the number of fouls. Overall, the girls had a great night, as they shot well, were effective trapping our opponent during the press, they worked well together, and hustled throughout the game."

Tied at 2-2 with less than a minute remaining in the first quarter on Saturday, Dawson County erupted for 14 straight points to close out the quarter and hold a 16-2 lead.

After the opening seven minutes, the Lady Tigers cruised to the 36-point win.

Jordan Moore and Haley Burgess led Dawson County in scoring with 11 points each.

Brooke Wende added 8 points, Lauren Burgess had 5 points, Emily Queen finished with 4 points, Katelynn Simpson had 3 points, Eliza Sillesky and Peytan Porter wrapped up the scoring with 2 points each.
