Local firefighters, paramedics and EMTs plan to hit the streets this weekend for an annual boot drive to raise Christmas funds for local families.

Dawson County Emergency Services hopes to provide some Christmas cheer to several families in the area by collecting donations.

Last year, emergency services personnel raised $8,000 to assist 50 local families.

"With the assistance and generosity of our community, DCES looks forward to achieving a new goal of $10,000 for 2012," said Capt. Jamerson Kerby, event organizer.

The Christmas Boot Drive will be held Nov. 29-30 and Dec. 1 at collection sites throughout the county, including major intersections and at participating shopping centers.

Funds will be distributed to K.A.R.E. for Kids, a nonprofit organization that provides Christmas presents to Dawson County children in need.

With assistance from local businesses, organizations, and community donations the organization provides gifts which include a warm jacket, shoes, three outfits and toys from the child's wish list.

The department routinely holds boot drives to raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association and Give Burns the Boot.

"The boot drives are always a good source of money, and some of the money comes back to the county," Kerby said.

"With this, 100 percent of what was collected stays in the county and helps local children."
