Riverview Middle School Student Council members selected the Dawson County Humane Society as their community service project during the 2008-2009 school year.

As a result of this choice, council members asked Riverview students, faculty and staff to donate items from the Humane Society’s online Wish List. Each item donated earned a student’s homeroom class points. The homeroom that collected the most items won a free soft drink during an after lunch break.

Student council members made posters listing needed items, as well as urged others to donate.

Students, faculty and staff were eager to donate plastic grocery bags, cleaning items, cat and dog food, paper towels, newspapers and many other items.

Money and gift cards were also donated to help support the Dawson County Humane Society.

Glen Simpson’s sixth grade homeroom class won the contest.

The overwhelming response led Kay Harris, shelter director of the Dawson County Humane Society, to question whether or not everything would fit in her car.

Riverview Middle School Student Council members are also very excited about volunteering at the Humane Society during the upcoming semester.
