Girls pick up 16th place

POSTED: November 13, 2012 4:30 p.m.

Head Coach Brian DeRose's Dawson County High School girls cross country team finished its season at the Class AAA state meet Saturday at Carrollton High School.

The Lady Tigers picked up a 16th place finish, out of 32 teams, throughout the state at the Nov. 10 event.

St. Pius X won the team title with 36 points.

Blessed Trinity was the state runners-up with 63 points.

Region 7-AAA foe White County came in a distant third with 102 points.

Freshman sensation Jenna Gearing from White County captured the individual title with a time of 19:34.

Gearing completed the 3.1-mile course yards ahead of second place finisher Devon Dabney from St. Pius X (20:21).

For Dawson County, Jade Perry led the way with a time of 23:54. Perry completed the course in 63rd place.

"The girl's race started off well, then we lost our top runner Cassidy Lecours to asthma around mid-race. I thought Jade (Perry) stepped up and ran a great state meet," DeRose said.

Also running the course at Carrollton for the Lady Tigers were: Savanna Estes (24:52), Taylor Grindstaff (24:54), Sara Bywaletz (25:29), Dana Little (28:45) and Megan Spillane (27:45).

There were 201 runners in the race.

"Both teams exceeded my expectations moving up into class AAA. I'm trying to be realistic in my expectations of the teams (both boys and girls) this season with moving up to AAA. They've both exceeded my expectations," DeRose said.
