Residents need to be involved with local government

POSTED: July 20, 2008 5:03 a.m.

For nearly 19 years, I have worked for local government.

As I improved my education and gained experience, most people (and I) thought that I would move on to work for the Federal or State government.

The more involved with my local community I became, however, the more I found myself drawn to local service.

I have discovered that democracy in its purest form can be found at the local government level.

Here, every citizen can find a way to impact policymakers and make a difference.

I also have learned that in local government, a public servant can see the fruits of his or her labor in the community where they live and work.

For the past two months, I have had the pleasure of serving as your county manager.

In this new role, one of my continued goals is to improve communication with Dawson County residents and taxpayers.

Over these past 19 years, I have been disappointed with the lack of involvement in county government by our residents.

The elected and appointed officials hear from only a small group of residents  about their concerns and issues.

The overwhelming majority of our residents go to work, raise their children, pay their taxes, and do not concern themselves with local government.

I want each of you to know that this is your county, your community and your government.

The elected and appointed officials work for you and need your input and your involvement.

Over the next few months, I will be reaching out to you in new ways.

I encourage you to get involved and take advantage of the opportunities that will be available to you.

I look forward to working with each of you to make Dawson County the type of community we desire.

I know that we will face many challenges and problems over the next few years, but I believe that together we can find a way to turn problems into opportunities and to seek better solutions.

I encourage you to contact me in person, by e-mail, or by phone with any issues or concerns that you may have.

Please feel free to contact Kevin Tanner at (706) 344-3501 or by e-mail at Tanner is the Dawson County manager.
