Ghosts and goblins on the prowl tonight

Motorists urged to watch out for trick or treaters

POSTED: October 31, 2012 4:00 a.m.

The Dawson County Sheriff's Office is urging drivers to watch out for ghosts, goblins and princesses on the prowl for tricks and treats this evening.

While Dawson County doesn't designate when trick-or-treaters can go door to door, kids are expected to hit the streets as early as 4 to 4:30 p.m. for the annual Halloween ritual.

"Motorists should be aware that children will be out in the neighborhoods going door to door and they should use caution watching for them," said Sheriff Billy Carlisle.

According to the American College of Emergency Physicians, the chance of a child being hit by a car is about four times higher on Halloween than any other night of the year.

"We also want to encourage all parents to have their children wear something reflective and have a flashlight with them at all times," Carlisle said.

He also encouraged trick or treating in larger groups or attending events planned as alternatives to going door-to-door for treats.

For the first time, this year Rock Creek Park is inviting the community to its inaugural Trunk or Treat from 4:30-8:30 p.m. today.

The event is free to the public and offers a well-lit, secure environment for trick-or-treaters.
"We will designate a specific area in the park for the trunk-or-treat and have it sectioned off so that vehicle traffic will not be permitted, providing a traffic-free area for the children," said organizer Buffie Hamil.

In addition to clubs, organizations and individuals passing out candy and treats, the event will also feature booths offering crazy hair, face painting, crafts, concessions, hay rides and games, among others.
